DOVETAILS
The saying that practice makes perfect is more true of dovetailing than
practically any other aspect of furniture-making. This strong and attractive
joint is well worth the effort involved to get the technique right.
Dovetails have always been regarded as the furniture-maker's number one
joint. They look good and they fulfil their function incredibly well - the
survival of dovetail joints in heavily used furniture made centuries ago,
confirms this. Furniture-makers use wide dovetail joints with several tails
side by side for box and drawer construction. The main difference here is
that the tails need to be smaller and finer, and the pins need shaping on
each side to match the tails ...
A through dovetail joint with brown oak tails and sycamore pins.
